The Powerhouse Museum was built on the former site of the Ultimo Power Station, an electric tram power station constructed in 1902, which is located just seven minutes’ walk from The Ultimo.

Taking out the title of the largest museum in Australia, the Powerhouse Museum is now home to some 400,000 artefacts, including the oldest operational rotative steam engine in the world. The museum also features 22 permanent exhibitions and five temporary exhibition spaces, as well as more than 250 interactive displays.

Its diverse collections span everything from science, technology, design and engineering to architecture, health and medicine, art, fashion, and contemporary culture. Get up close with a Boulton & Watt steam engine from 1785, or experience life in the golden age by watching a vintage film in a reconstructed 1930s cinema.

The Powerhouse Museum also hosts regular workshops, tours and demonstrations, performances, forums, and other events with a focus on creativity and design.
