Smith Street Mall

The Mall is the central hub of the central business district (CBD) where locals and visitors can shop for Aboriginal art, locally made jewellery and tropical clothing.

You can enjoy the cool ambience of one of the many alfresco cafés, or just take in the history of the place, from the building of the former Victoria Hotel (built 1890) to the information plaques up The Mall, which give out interesting facts about the Great Hurricane of 1897, the arrival of the first Chinese people or the discovery of pearl shell in the harbour.
